A recent survey released the results of the Melbourne “liveability” study, which ranked every suburb from 1 to 321.

In top place: East Melbourne.

Even leafy and desirable East Melbourne came under fire. “Punt Road traffic fumes. Cough, cough, cough.”

In search of consensus, we turned to the “liveability calculator”.

Over 60,000 readers have taken this online quiz, which reveals the best suburb for you, based on how you priorities 15 criteria (such as crime rate, distance from the CBD, transport options – and so on).

Most significantly, the suburb of Melbourne (essentially the CBD) outperformed everything in three price brackets, suggesting it’s a bit of a live-ability bargain. And the kicker in the story? When we take money out of the equation, the suburb that, on average, most fits the average Melburnian’s needs is … East Melbourne.
